For many Palestinians, the olive tree “is a symbol of their nation. It is seen as embodying the qualities of rooted ness and durability, attributes Palestinians say they believe have preserved them during years of struggle with Israel"
-Lynfield, Ben. “Another Casualty of War: Trees.” The Christian Science Monitor. 12/8/2000.
The destruction of these olive trees is a violation of the Geneva Convention: Article 33 prohibits collective punishment, and the land leveling and property destruction carried out by Israeli forces are collective punishments. “No protected person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed. Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.” “Reprisals against protected persons and their property are prohibited.”
Thousands of olive trees have been uprooted to make way for the Apartheid wall that is currently under construction, and thousands of Palestinian farmers say their livelihood is being taken away.
But worse than the destruction of these trees is what Yedioth Ahronoth reporters have discovered about the sale of these uprooted stolen trees to rich Israeli settlers for profit by the contracting companies that are already profiting off of the huge contracts they have with the military, (which is paid for with our tax dollars).
The Palestinian Agriculture Ministry claims that in the two years between 2000 and 2002, that 200,000 olive trees have been destroyed by Israeli soldiers and settlers to provide security for settlers.
