Viking Answer Lady Gifts : Viking Art and Literature : Sigurðr the Dragonslayer
These modern carved panels depict scenes from Völsunga Saga, the tale of the hero Sigurðr the Völsung. On the left, Sigurðr slays the dragon Fafnir. At top right, he rides his famous horse Grani through the Ring of Fire to find the valkyrie Brynhildr. At bottom right, Sigurðr discovers the sleeping valkyrie Brynhildr is a woman.
Oslo Town Hall (Oslo Rådhus) was built in 1950 and is richly decorated inside and out by famous Norwegian artists from the first part of the twentieth century. Themes of Norwegian history and culture predominate, depicting daily life and Viking mythology. The walls surrounding the courtyard are decorated with a variety of carvings by Dagfinn Werenskiold that depict Norse mythology.
